The Five Obstructions

My initial impression of the film the five obstructions, with its mix of low quality, almost gorilla style documentary filming and experimental cinema was one of intreag. It becomes quite clear early on, even with all the obstructions placed upon him by Trier that Leth is truly a master of his craft. His beautiful use of lighting and cinematography and the ingenious way he employees a non-liner frame format in the final edit of the first instruction in Cuba shows Trier and the audience from the out set that he is capable of remaking his own “masterpiece” (The perfect human). Even with seemingly imposable restrictions placed upon him.
